
Six days after the construction, the six-kilometerShariatpur-Vedarganj-Kashimpur highway under Shariatpur district turned into adilapidated state. Thepitch of the road is going up with the pull of a hand. The contractor has beenaccused of widespread irregularities and corruption.However,they have resumed work on the carpeting of road site. But, without beingsatisfied, there was anger among the locals.VedarganjUpazila Engineer Akhter Hossain said the contractor had been repaired damagedroad immediately due to carpeting during construction.
LGED(Local Government EngineeringDepartment) sources said that tenders were floated in the first half of the year to construct aroad on Shariatpur-Vedarganj-Kashimpur 5.490 kilometer road under the LGED Vedarganj upazila. As a lowest bidder for this work, the Sheikh Enterprisescontractor was given a mandate on June 23 last. It was ordered to finish thework in just five days at a cost of Tk 3.68 crore. That highway development project expired on December 2 .HasimAli and Abu Munsur Rahman, locals said Manik Sheikh, the owner of thecontractor company Sheikh Enterprises, was quick to finish the road at a hurrywith poor construction materials. So before the work is finished, the entireroad within 5 km is cracked. When the locals put their hands on the crack, thewhole carpeting went up.AbulQasim Azad of Koratali area said the carpeting was also going on due to thefriction of the wheels of the vehicles.Hesaid the road was bursting into chaos. The amount of thickness it did not give.So the whole money of the government is wasted.ManikSheikh, owner of the contractor Sheikh Enterprises, tried to contact the phonemultiple times but was not found.Deputy Assistant Engineer of Vedarganj Upazila. IbrahimKhalil said, “We sent proposals for carpeting on this street of 40 milimeter but theapproval has been given 20 milimeter”. Due to the low depthness of carpeting of road, thecarpeting of the road has gone up due to friction of the wheels of the car.After we looked into the matter, the contractor made the repairs as quickly aspossible.
