Onion prices shoot up

The retail price of onion has gone up to Tk 50 per kg in city kitchen markets, putting the low and middle income people, under more financial pressure.

Retailers were seen selling the local variety of onion for Tk 50 a kg, up by Tk 15 from two days ago while the imported Indian onion was being sold for Tk 37-38 a kg, an increase by about Tk 12.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, a retailer at Khatunganj Onion market, said onion import is closed now. That’s why the price of onion has increased in local market.

Mohammad Idris, General Secretary of Hamidullah Mia Market Businessmen Welfare Association in Khatunganj said, there is no shortage of onion in market. There are enough onions in the warehouse.
